Sayres is seeking an Integrated Logistics Support Technical Writer/Editor with Secret Clearance located in Washington, DC.

The position is located in one of the most exciting, growing and developing areas of Washington DC- just outside the Navy Yard almost next to National's Park. The economic development of the area provides for high quality of work/life with many vibrant restaurants and green spaces along the river. We are currently supporting operations through COVID based telework protocols and ongoing telework options may be discussed upon interview.


In support of an expeditionary shipbuilding program, the Integrated Logistics Support Technical Writer/Editor will independently and collaboratively assist with the development and revision of technical documents including technical manuals, user guides, and other written materials. The successful candidate will be able to conceptualize, write, edit, and review complex technical materials, consult relevant information sources, including library resources, technical and financial documents, and client and project personnel, to obtain background information, as well as verify the adherence to relevant guidelines and regulations governing project deliverables. The responsibilities are as follows:

  • Responsible for the development of preliminary and final Technical Manuals (TMs).
  • Conduct research and gather technical and background information for inclusion in documents, that when final, are useful for machinery and equipment installation, start-up operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and shutdown procedures and instructions in a shipboard environment.
  • Prepare technical manuals for various mechanical and electrical equipment for Expeditionary Sea Base Class ships. Produce commercial/general purpose technical manuals and supplemental data as well as systems/special purpose manuals for all installed equipment and components onboard the ship which meet Navy TM standards for publication.
  • Understand the work of the Technical Manual Management Authority (TMMA), coordinate with the TMMA for TM publication, and update TMs according to the shipbuilder specifications.
  • Maintain compliance with technical requirements and regulations.
  • Ensure written materials are clear and concise with an understanding of audience segmentation.
  • Create and edit materials that meet industry standards.
  • Conduct a quality review of documentation for technical accuracy and clarity.
  • Provide related logistics support to Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), PMS 385 Theater and Strategic Sealift Program.
  • Integrate efforts with the provisioning and configuration groups to provide information relevant to spares documentation and procurement and item configuration.
  • Take notes and summaries, as needed, at technical and collaborative meetings.
  • Plan, prepare, and edit assigned documents.
  • Review drawings, training materials, maintenance requirements, and repair procedures for inclusion in documents.
  • Determine the needs of end users of technical documentations.
  • Revise and review documents other than technical manuals, as needed or directed.
  • Able to work in a shipboard/shipyard environment to validate and verify.

Qualifications & Clearance Requirements

Education, Work Experience, Skills, and Clearance

  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of five (5) years technical writing experience or High School graduate with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience providing technical writing support.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong editing, formatting, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge with editing and formatting in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Self-starter who works well independently and as part on an integrated team.
  • Recent experience within the last (3) years demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of grammar and written styles while developing, editing, and producing technical and graphical documentation and delivering finished products.
  • Familiar with Navy or Military Sealift Command (MSC) shipboard equipment and technical manuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and present information.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Strong time management and planning skills.
  • Ability to accept constructive user feedback and incorporate it into a complete and professional final product.
  • Ability to organize information in a cohesive manner with strong attention to detail.
  • Active Secret security clearance verifiable in Defense Information System for Security (DISS), formerly JPAS, or the ability to obtain one.

Highly Desired

  • Active or Reserve Navy Service or Military Sealift Command service within the last three (3) years is a plus.
  • Familiar with Technical Data Management Information System (TDMIS), Model Based Product Support (MBPS) and the Material and Information Real-time Logistics Information Network (MERLIN) is a plus.
