The Primary Linguist/Analyst - Arabic (MSA) will be responsible for the following:

  • Perform in the role of a Primary Linguist/Analyst for the full range of activities in processing material or participating in situations requiring advanced capability to perform translation, transcription, and interpretation.
  • Translate a wide variety of complex texts that may contain difficult, idiomatic, scientific, and colloquial writing capturing subtleties, nuance, tone and register.  (Text might include commentary reflecting specific culture to analysis to argumentation and translator can capture meaning of socio-cultural elements embedded in text.  Expression reflects native usage.)
  • Triage documents to isolate full-range of information that is of importance to the task at hand.
  • May assist with material development (strong computer skills - MS applications and internet research).
  • Review audio material and writes/transcribes information from target language into English with high degree of accuracy expression.
  • Review another linguist's work accuracy of content and quality of written expression commensurate with his/her own ability as a translator.
  • Work with reports, memos, correspondence, or audio on specialized topics such as scientific or technical, or that is more formal in nature; oral communication at conference level.
  • Overseas travel is required.

Qualifications & Clearance Requirements


Education, Work Experience, Skills and Clearance Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) to ten (10) years of professional work experience.
  • ILR Testing Requirements: Minimum ILR 3-3+ for translation or interpretation on inter-agency language roundtable.
  • Able to identify and accurately summarize all pertinent factual information and abstract concepts, recognizing the significance of complex expressions, such as colloquial text or technical terminologies.
  • Able to interpret at virtually all levels, including complex or highly idiomatic speech with a very high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent command in terms of speaking and comprehension of one or more dialects.
  • Successfully render expressions specific to a culture, and convey almost all subtleties and nuances approximately.  Ability to handle effectively and mode/register.
  • Function familiarly with the subject matter.
  • Possess and maintain a Top Secret security clearance for the duration of employment.
  • The selected individual may/will be subject to a Government security background investigation and must meet eligibility and suitability requirements prior to the start date.
  • U.S. Citizen and successfully pass a background investigation as a condition of employment.
  • Candidate shall be required to relocate/reside in the Washington Metropolitan Area.  Relocation costs are not reimbursable.
  • Available for short and long term temporary duty (TDY) abroad. (Overseas travel is required.)


  • Bachelor's or master's degree.
  • May have some skills in simultaneous interpretation.
